Sleep is a basic human need essential for health and wellbeing. During sleep many restorative and repair mechanisms are activated. Yet millions of people do not get enough sleep or have conditions that cause poor quality sleep. It is estimated that 40 million Americans suffer from different sleep disorders and 60 percent of adults report having sleep problems a few nights a week or more. Most of those with these problems live undiagnosed and untreated.

In addition, more than 40 percent of adults experience daytime sleepiness severe enough to interfere with their daily activities at least a few days each month. Treatment of sleep disorders can help prevent and manage many diseases, including serious cardiovascular life threatening events.

Increasing public awareness, incorporating sleep into routine medical screening practices and implementation of cost effective treatment methods are some of the steps needed to provide the best patient care.
